Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, on Friday, May 1, 2020, led the Adwoa Safo Foundation (ASF), to make donations to two Orphanages comprising the HandiVangelism Orphanage and the Motherly Love Foundation Orphanage both of which are within the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency. The items donated to each Orphanage include several packs of foodstuffs, toiletries, PPE and an undisclosed amount of money.
The Adwoa Safo Foundation is an NGO, founded by the Member of Parliament, Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo, with the primary aim of providing livelihood support to vulnerable groups in society particularly women and children as well as persons living with various degrees of disabilities with the view to tackling inequality and promoting inclusiveness in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The NGO has, since its launch sometime in 2019, undertaken several social relief projects within the Greater Accra Region, with the latest being the donations to these two Orphanages. Indeed, the NGO has been much busier in the past three months which have seen a quadrupling of its activities in the wake of the harsh socio-economic conditions being experienced in parts of the country occasioned by the imposition of restrictions to contain the deadly COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
In making the donations, Hon Adwoa Safo, who doubles as the Deputy Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, said, consistent with the vision and mission of the Adwoa Safo Foundation, she was inspired by the need to urgently attend to the welfare needs of the most vulnerable in society whose already precarious plight has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 containment measures.
“For us at the Adwoa Safo Foundation, reaching out to the less privileged is our way of life, and so, the harsh conditions brought about by the COVID-19 containment measures and restrictions, have made it even more imperative for us to up our game under the circumstances. Indeed, we, at Adwoa Safo Foundation only take delight when we put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable including these beautiful kids”, she posited.
The Dome-Kwabenya MP also used the occasion to educate the kids in both Orphanages on the need to regularly wash their hands with soap under running water; use sanitizers frequently and adhere to the various social and physical distancing protocols announced by President Akufo-Addo and health experts.
On their part, managers of both facilities who received the items; Pastor Ashley and Rev John Azumah of the HandiVangelism Orphanage and Motherly Love Foundation Orphanage respectively, thanked Hon Adwoa Safo and her Foundation for this benevolent gesture which, according to them, has become a regular ritual on the part of the Foundation, and promised to use the items for the intended purpose. They also used the opportunity to call on other philanthropists to emulate the good examples of Hon. Adwoa Safo and her Foundation.
Equally, the children of both Orphanages could not hide their overwhelming joy even at the sight of the Dome-Kwabenya MP who is also the Minister of State in-charge of Public Procurement, whom they consider their mother and benefactor. They, in characteristic fashion, sang and danced to various songs of praises with the Member of Parliament.
