Africa’s biggest solar project to be put up at Nyinbali

Plans are far advance for Home Energy Africa Limited to construct a 200 million dollars energy project at Nyinbali in the Nadowli-Kaleo District.

The project, which will be the biggest solar energy project in Africa, is expected to produce 100 megawatts of solar energy when completed.

Mr. Charles Sena Ayenu, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Home Energy Africa Limited, said this when he together with a team of experts visited the community on Friday to kick start some studies on site for the project.

Feasibility studies, environmental impact studies and geological studies among others are some of the areas the experts would be studying on the 200 hectares of land donated by the community.

He said the project hopefully would be completed by end of 2016 and that the power to be generated from the project would be sold to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to feed into the national grid.

In considering where to site the project in Africa, Mr Ayenu said Ghana became an easy choice because of her political and economic stability.

On the current Ghana’s energy crisis, Mr. Ayenu suggested that government pushed more for solar energy because it was much cheaper to deal with.

“Ten years ago it was five dollars per watt but currently it is two dollars per watt and could still even be reduced if you get the right partners”, he said.

Mr. Ayenu said the project would provide more than 200 jobs to the people in the local communities around the project.

Mr. Greg Severance, Senior Associate – Renewable Energy and also the Project Manager, explained that the Nyinbali area was chosen for the project because of the high sun radiation which is rated best.

Mr. Severance said the team had a period of 90 days to complete the studies to pave way for real construction to begin.

Mr. John Bosco Bomansaan, Nadowli-Kaleo District Chief Executive, thanked Home Energy Africa for choosing to establish the project in the district and pledged the support of the Assembly towards the successful completion of the project.
