The Agona West Municipal Assembly on Friday presented 580 laptops to selected 36 basic schools to promote Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools in the municipality.

Mr Samuel Oppong, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who made the presentation, said the provision of laptop computers formed part of the second phase of Government's Better Ghana Agenda under President John Dramani Mahama's Administration.

He said the initiative also forms part of the government’s computerization programme intended to promote ICT at the basic schools and that it would also facilitate effective teaching, learning, innovation and research.

Mr. Oppong said the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency have been transformed by the government to offer more skills training to the youth to make them employable in the job market.

He said the unemployment among especially the youth is of a great concern to all and said government was adopting policies and programmes to find lasting solution to the canker.

Mr. Oppong expressed the hope that the equipment, which are not for sale, would stimulate academic performance of students in the area.

Mr. Obeng Ampadu, Agona West Municipal Director of Education, said the laptops would help push Agona West forward in academic excellence.

He therefore urged heads of schools which benefited from the laptops to take good care of them and put them to good use to improve ICT education in the area.

Nana Kwao Ponsi II, Chairman of the Agona West Oversight Education Committee urged children not to use the laptops negatively but rather learn hard to enable them to pass their ICT examination.

Mr. Charles Obeng-Inkoom, Member of Parliament for Agona West urged parents to help their children to study hard, adding that education is the only panacea that could make them responsible future adults.
