Agonaman cancels 2010 Akwanbo Festival

Accra, July 20, GNA - All towns within Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council have cancelled this year's Akwanbo Festivals in view of the devastating floods which recently hit the Agona State, especially Agona Swedru and Nyakrom.

This decision was taken at a Standing Committee meeting of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council held on Saturday, July 17, at Agona Nyakrom.

A statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Nana Kojo Amuakwa V, Agona Duakwahene and Krontihene of Nyakrom Traditional Area said the Council unanimously agreed that since the recent floods at Agona Swedru destroyed the two bridges in the town, sufferings of the people in the Agona State had been massive.

"Several people have been displaced by the floods and are facing accommodation problems, traders, transport owners, workers and farmers are all facing serious challenges. Many farms in the area were flooded and are still water-logged making farming difficult," the statement said.

It said in the midst of these serious problems, the chiefs had decided that it would be inappropriate to observe this year's Akwanbo Festival.

The Council comprises Agona Nyakrom, Agona Swedru, Agona Duakwa, Agona Kwanyarku, Agona Nsaba, Abodom, Kwaman, Upper Bobikuma and Agona Nkum.
