Agyarko supports schools

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Emmanuel K. Agyarko, has donated an amount of GH¢2,000 to the Ayawaso- West Basic Schools to support the biennial Sports and Cultural festival.

The money is to assist about 27public schools in the constituency participating in the up-coming event, slated for July 13, 2013.

The festival dubbed “Our Culture, Our Pride, Our Identity” would host schools like Dzorwulu Primary and Junior High school, Legon Star Village school, among others, to display the Ghanaian culture through singing, drumming, cooking and others.

Mr Agyarko said even though education played an important role in the development of children, it was also essential to ensure that children are developed physically in order to maintain healthy bodies.

He added there was also a need to bring back certain cultural studies in the basic schools since children have become ignorant of the Ghanaian culture.

Speaking with ardour he averred, “Parents and teachers have a great responsibility to bring up children.

We must be mindful of our culture since most of our children have neglected the rich traditions because they have not been taught in school.”

Eleanor Swatson- Brown, Officer in Charge of Ayawaso West Wuogon schools, who received the money, revealed that the festival which is celebrated every two years would bring together students from the various Basic and Junior High Schools to exhibit the various cultures in Ghana.

She again added that through the festival, students were able to exhibit their God- given talent, as well as educate the public about the Ghanaian culture.

She said students who have been selected would participate in disciplines such as choral singing, art education, live drawing, playing and interpreting talking drums as well as compete with other sub-metro schools within Accra.

Mrs Swatson-Brown expressed gratitude to the MP for his kind gesture and promised to put the money in judicious use for a successful sports and cultural festival.
