Mpasatia (Ash), Sept.16, GNA - Fear and insecurity have gripped residents of Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua district as a result of persistent threat and harassment by a group of young men who have identified themselves as "Al-Queeda" in the town. The situation is so alarming that, they have remained indoors and refused to go out at night or to the farm.
Mr George Amankwaatia, assembly member for the area speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the community had formed Neighbourhood Watch Committees as temporary measure to provide security for the residents while the police had been informed.
He said on the night of Wednesday, September 14, this year, the volunteers arrested a suspected thief with a fowl. Mr Amankwaatia said when the suspect was being sent to the Nkawie police station, members of the group armed with weapons attacked the volunteers and set the suspect free.
He said Kofi Opoku, 22, unemployed and a member of the group received injuries and was admitted at the Nkawie Government hospital and activities of the group reported to the Police.
Mr Obeng Antwi, Unit Committee Chairman and Mr Kwabena Opoku, Vice-Chairman of the volunteers called on the Ghana Police Service not only institute measures to provide security to the residents but also open a police station in the town.
Police Chief Inspector Ben Antwi, Nkawie Police Commander confirmed the situation but said there was absolute peace in the community.
