A driver's mate is fighting for his life after allegedly being shot by Corporal Franklin Forson at a police checkpoint in Danchira, in the Ga South Municipality.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2024, when the corporal supposedly fired his assault rifle without provocation, striking the victim.

According to a report by adomonline.com, an eyewitness, Isaac Okyere, who is also the driver of the Kia truck, reported that he was stopped at the checkpoint and questioned by a Community Police Assistant before Corporal Forson suddenly opened fire, hitting the empty bucket of the truck.

The bullets penetrated the cabin, severely injuring the driver's mate, who was rushed to the hospital.

The driver is calling for an independent inquiry and justice for the victim, the report said.

Although senior police officers have declined to comment on the matter, sources say that the incident is being treated as an accident.

The report added that Corporal Forson has been asked to cover the victim's medical expenses.

The Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) is currently investigating the matter.
