Appeal for rehabilitation of Northern Volta roads

Jasikan, April 07, GNA - Participants at the Peoples' Assemblies Forums at Nkwanta and Jasikan Districts have appealed to the Government to expedite action on the construction and rehabilitation of roads within the districts.

They contended that lack of good roads or their absence were responsible for the slow economic and social progress in the areas. The participants complained about the Kadjebi-Apesokubi, Dzindzinso-Kadjebi Alokpatse-Nkwanta and the Nkwanta town roads. Mr Joseph Nayan, Deputy Volta Regional Minister in response assured them that plans were underway to repackage the roads to be re-awarded for other contractors and hinted that tender bids had been opened for new road contracts within the area as well.

He said non-performing contractors who delayed projects would be blacklisted because their inability to deliver on schedule was affecting government policies and programmes.

The participants also complained about lack of telecommunication facilities in the areas, intermittent supply of electricity, lack of potable water and poor television reception.

They also expressed concern about the inability of Parliament to pass bills on Disability, Whistle Blowers and Freedom to Information and the attitude of some members on the Representation of the People's Amendment Law (ROBAL).

Mr Kofi Adjei-Ntim, Kadjebi District Chief Executive said the Peoples Assembly concept was instituted to foster good governance and deepen democracy.

He said funds were available to commence Community Policing programme and appealed to the youth to avail themselves of the opportunity to help protect their areas.

Mr Joseph Denteh, Nkwanta District Chief Executive said the concept offered a cross fertilization of ideas to serve as the support for Government in planning and programming.
