Kumasi, May 17, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Police Command has expressed its condolences to the families of the 34 people who perished on Monday when an Inter-City STC bus and a 207 Benz bus collided head-on at Akropong Junction on the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway.
"It is our prayer that the families of the deceased would gather strength and courage to survive this disaster that has befallen them and move ahead", the Command said in a press statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Frank Adu-Poku, Regional Police Commander, in Kumasi on Wednesday.
Thirty-two out of the 34 deceased persons who were all choristers of the Abuakwa Parish of the Catholic Church aboard the 207 bus died on the spot following the accident together with two other persons on board the STC bus.
The bodies of the deceased comprising 17 males and 17 females have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mortuary.
The statement said two other victims of the accident in critical conditions were receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the KATH, while 11 others had been treated and discharged. It cautioned drivers to be wary on the roads since the rainy season had rendered most roads very slippery "and too dangerous to toy with". "We urge drivers to drive with utmost care, eschew drunkenness, over-loading and speeding and motor traffic regulations should be their guide", the statement noted. 17 May 06
