Keta, Feb 03, GNA - Mr Edward Ahiabor, the Keta District Chief Executive, has said the government would assist the Tsiame Secondary School, a community school in the Keta District, with HIPC funds to enable it to procure some of its basic facilities.
He said the so-called big schools in the country started in a humble way and urged the people to work harder to bring the school to the same standard with others in the region in terms of discipline, academic performance and extra curricula activities.
Mr Ahiabor said this when the Association of West Africa Youth Outreach Union, (WAYOU), a group of West African citizens resident in Europe, donated 100 dual desks and sports equipment worth over 20 million cedis to the school at Tsiame.
The President of WAYOU, Mr. Philip Fiadzomor, said the union aims at helping to improve the quality of education in the West African schools.
Mr Fiadzomor congratulated the school on its good performance and urged the students to study hard to excel.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr. G.A.K. Goka, said in spite of the numerous problems facing the school the students' performance at the SSSCE certificate examination had been relatively better compared with the neighbouring schools.
He said plans are in the pipeline for the GES to absorb the school into the public system this year to enable the school benefit from the supply of textbooks and other facilities.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the school, Mr Edwin Fianke, said the Tsiame Development Association had built a three-unit classroom block for the school and called on the Ministry of Education to assist in the construction of a headmaster's bungalow, an administration block and library.
Torgbui Shikabli II, Dufia of Tsiame, said other development projects for the town had come to a standstill because the coffers of Tsiame Development Association had been depleted by the huge expenditure made on the school including the payment of salaries for the staff. He appealed to all progressive and benevolent organisations to come to the aid of the school by helping to extend electricity to the school to help the students study in the night.
