Atekyedo (C/R), Oct. 5, GNA -Madam Adgoa Duah, women leader of Atekyedo near Winneba, has appealed to the Ghana Water Company in Winneba to extend pipe-borne water to the village and its surroundings to stop them from the use of untreated water.
Making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Atekyedo on Tuesday, Madam Duah expressed regret that even though the Ayensu River that supplies water for the company flows through the community, yet, they do not enjoy the treated water from the river.
According to the woman "it is very painful that for over twenty years that the company was established the people of Atekyedo are still using untreated water from streams".
She said that the people are prepared to offer communal labour towards the extension of water to the community and also ready to honour their water bills when they are connected.
The women leader urged the government to continue to make life at the rural area very bearable to discourage the youth from drifting to the cities.
She expressed deep regret that a three-classroom block the people built for a kindergarten for their children four years ago, was demolished by rains because the people were unable to get funds to roof it.
According to her, the former district assembly was also not able to assist them with roofing sheets, despite several approaches for assistance. This unfortunate situation killed their communal spirit.
She said that, they are rebuilding the school and hoped that, this time the District Assembly and the Ghana Education Service will come to their aid. The new assemblyman for the area, Mr Crosby Asmah confirmed the woman's story and explained that the people were unable to roof the building due to the high rate of poverty in the area.
Commending on the situation, the District Manager of the Water Company, Mr John Mensah said the company plans to extend water to the surrounding communities but lack of funds had delayed the programme.
