The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police command has re-opened the Atronie Police Station in the Sunyani Municipality.
In 2007 the police station was closed down following an incident that led to the murder of a hospital administrator, and subsequent violent attack on the Station and personnel by some people of Atronie.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, emphasised that crime fighting was a shared responsibility between the police and the general public.
Inaugurating the renovated police post in the town last Friday, DCOP Atingane advised the people to report persons with questionable characters to the police for interrogations.
He assured that the confidentiality of informants would be guaranteed and asked the people to refrain from shielding troublemakers.
Nana Amponsem Darko II, the Chief of Atronie said it was untrue that the people of Atronie were lawless and assured personnel who would be stationed in the area of the support of his subjects.
He expressed gratitude to the government for the progress of work in the on-going construction of the new police station and pleaded for staff quarters for the personnel.
Nana Darko II said the Atronie clinic had been inaugurated for some time now but it was not operational and appealed to the authorities to do something about it.
Meanwhile, there were spontaneous jubilations in the town when the station was re-opened.
The people of the predominantly farming community could not hide their joy as almost everybody, including the aged and children danced to traditional songs and brass band music and marched through the principal street of the town.
According to the people the re-opening of the police post would help control crime wave in the community.
They told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that thieves had been terrorizing the community since the police station was closed down about nine years ago.
