Battle of Myohaung commemorated at Takoradi

Apremdo(W/R), Jan.23, GNA - A drum-head service to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung was held at the Second Battalion of Infantry at Apremdo near Takoradi on Monday. Seven Officers and 151 men of the Battalion, Western Naval Command and Takoradi Airforce Station formed the parade under the command of Captain Elvis Gyadu.

A contingent of the Western Regional Veteran Association of Ghana (VAG) also participated in the parade.

Lieutenant (Reverend) Paul Adjei-Djan led the service assisted by Lieutenant (Reverend) Francis Agyeman.

Flight Lieutenant Mohammed Rafui led the Moslem prayers. Commodore Frank Delle, Two Garrison Commander, read the scriptures. Ex-Corporal John Kobina Ghann, Western Regional Chairman of VAG who read the history of the Battle of Myohaung, said the West African Frontier Force (WAFF)won the battle.

He said the Force included soldiers from Nigeria, the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.

Ex-Corporal Ghann said, "Much as the battle was won, it was not without serious sacrifices including lives of our gallant soldiers." Among dignitaries at the service were, Madam Sophia Horner-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister, Brigadier-General Emmanuel Otchere, General Officer Commanding and Lt.General Albert Kwesi Ocran, National Chairman of the Veteran Association of Ghana as well as service commanders and heads of departments were also present.
