Nsein (W/R), Sept. 30, GNA- Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, Omanhene of the Nsein Traditional Area has urged the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture Affairs to critically access the impact of the wholesale promotion of divisional chiefs to Paramount status.
He said this could worsen the crisis in the chieftaincy institution and create more confusion and division, which may ruin the institution. Alulae Kwame made the appeal at a durbar of chiefs and people of Nsien to climax his 40th anniversary celebration of his enstoolment. The occasion also coincided with the round off this year's Kundum festival of the people of Nsien.
"Government should be extra cautious in responding to the several applications from certain traditional councils in the Western Region" he added.
He said for being open, truthful and demanding the equal rights of the Nsein Township, he was arrested, remanded for three days without justifiable cause under the PNDC era. Awulae said he was grateful to God for being alive and witnessing the ongoing changes in all sectors of the economy within the 40 period of his reign.
He said the Nsein Secondary School was in a deplorable state and needs massive rehabilitation to put the school in proper shape. He appealed to government to tar some of the roads of the town, especially the main road through the palace to the Junior High School. He said people of Nzema descent must take the education of their children seriously and do everything possible to increase enrolment in their respective communities.
Awulae Adjaye expressed his concern about the lack of discipline among the youth especially their disrespect for the elderly. Mr. Anthony E. Amoah, Western Regional Minister, commended the elderly in the area for their determination and enormous contributions to the growth of society.
He appealed to the chiefs and the community to document their struggles and achievements for the good of the society. Mr. Amoah said the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) was ready to assist and support such individuals to document their legacies. Papa Owusu-Ankomah, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant said change was inevitable and urged all to embrace change and become abreast with time.
Many people including some traditional authorities refuse to change with time and become "static" and continue to follow age-old customs, traditions and practices that are not in the interest of the larger society. He challenged all stakeholders to work hard and reverse the negative educational record in the region.
