Bishop Herman College wins quiz contest on Environment

Ho, June 5, GNA - Bishop Herman College (BIHECO) at Kpando on Friday emerged winners of this year's Environment Quiz competition for Secondary Schools in the Volta region as part of activities to mark World Environment day, which falls on Sunday, June 6. BIHECO, winners of last year's competition got 68 points to beat Mawuli School which had 49 points to take the second position. Sogakope Secondary School (SOGASCO) came third with 43 points and Keta Secondary School (KETASCO) came fourth with 40 points. The competition, aimed at getting the youth interested in national issues, covered questions on environmental protection, HIV/AIDS, sports and current affairs.

In an address, the Regional Programme Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Togbui Akliku Ahorney, said the involvement of students in the celebration was to capture the attention and interest of young people towards environmental protection.

He therefore called on students to study earnestly and be advocators and environmental activists wherever they may be. Mr Mawutor Goh, Ho Municipal Chief Executive, underscored the importance of planned tree planting, saying trees are essential gifts of nature that promote life in terms of beautification, shelter and air purification.

He charged the students to see the competition not as a mere academic exercise and a form entertainment, but also as an obligation to plant and protect trees and the environment. 05 June 05
