Buem citizens hold mini congress

Accra, April 10, GNA - Mr. Kwame Donkor, Jasikan District Chief Executive (DCE) on Saturday called on citizens of the Buem Traditional Area to put aside their differences and unite to develop the area or lose their identity.

He noted that Buem used to be a state rich in resources and traditional values but unfortunately those values have been left to fall out.

The DCE urged the Chiefs and people engaged in protracted disputes to find amicable settlement to bring the area back to its lost glory. Mr. Kwame Donkor was addressing a mini Congress of citizen of the Buem Traditional Area in Accra organised by the Coalition for Peace and Development in Buem, a non Governmental Organisation (NGO). It was aimed at bringing together all interest groups and citizens to form a formidable group to facilitate disputes resolution and to share ideas for the overall development of the area.

He said roads and schools were being constructed in most parts of the Districts, adding that, accommodation for teachers were also being put up, while scholarships had been granted to citizens to improve education.

The DCE commended the Regional Coordinating Council and some religious leaders through whose intervention the people of Alarvanyo and Nkonya were now prepared to smoke the peace pipe.

Mr Henry Ford Kamel, MP for Buem appealed to President Kufuor to maintain performing DCEs to ensure the development of the districts. He explained that changing DCEs disrupted development plans and stated that consultations were going on with some international and local NGOs to promote Buem culture and values.

The MP said discussions were taking place to improve supervision and monitoring to help raise the standard of education in the area. Mr Beick Baffour, Interim Secretary of the Coalition for Peace and Development of Buem, said the Congress marked a turning point in the quest of the people of Buem to re-discover their identity as a legacy for posterity.

Mr Isaaka Buriama, Interim President, expressed the hope that the delegates would be well informed and equipped to face the challenges confronting them.
