Sandema (U/E), Jan. 21, GNA- The Builsa District Assembly last year collected a total of 250 million cedis on its local revenue sources, exceeding the target by 81 million cedis.
Part of this was spent on social infrastructure in the area on health, education and local government. Reverend James Agalik, the District Chief Executive, said this at the People's Assembly at Sandema on Wednesday.
He said in addition to renovating some schools 45 additional classrooms were built in selected schools providing 2,250 pupils with decent classrooms.
He said the Assembly collaborated with some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to provide school uniforms and stationery to the people and commended UNICEF for giving furniture to 84 primary schools in district.
Re-acting to a complaint of lack of teachers in many of the schools, Reverend Agalik said the assembly would sponsor some teacher trainees and also train volunteer pupil teachers to help in the primary schools.
Reverend Agalik said in the area of health, the assembly was constructing four nurses' quarters at Sandema and Kadema, a clinic, children's ward at the Sandema hospital, nutrition centres and some KVIPs.
He said the assembly has been assisting the Sandema hospital to carry out immunizations and health campaigns. He said the district, one of the pilot areas had made progress in preparing for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), it had established a Health Insurance Task Force, and trained them to carry out community and social mobilization in support of the scheme. The assembly had also renovated and furnished an office building and advertised for a manager and an auxiliary staff for the scheme, he added.
Reverend Agalik expressed concern at the poor state of telephone services in the district and appealed to the Ghana Telecom (GT) to give some attention to the district.
