Leklebi-Dafor, Sept 4, GNA - Personnel of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) at the Leklebi-Dafor check point on Monday seized 19 bags of dried cocoa beans, weighing about 1.4 tons, meant for smuggling.
The KIA truck with registration number GT 645 E, which was being used to cart the produce across the border into Togo, has also been impounded.
A CEPS source at the border who briefed the Ghana News Agency, but preferred to remain anonymous, said the smuggling gang sped-off on seeing the CEPS personnel on duty who pursued them. The gang, who attempted to offload the produce in a bush near Leklebi-Kame township, escaped arrest leaving behind the cocoa and the truck.
The source said the impounded cocoa beans and truck would be handed over to the appropriate agencies for further investigations. 04. 09. 09
