Carpenters' Association appeals for industrial village

Akyem Oda, March 22, GNA-The Birim South District Carpenters Association (BSCA) on Thursday petitioned the district assembly to assist them to acquire a site for the establishment of an industrial village. In a petition signed by Mr Gideon Gyimah Aboagye, Secretary of the association, it said the main occupation of the youth in the district was carpentry in particular and other wood works in general. The petition said over the years, carpenters and other artisans in the district have had the difficulty of safe, proper and economic place of operation.

"This has led to a situation where carpenters and other artisans operate mostly from unapproved locations, including the road sides, kiosks and stores thereby causing serious discomfort and nuisance to the assembly in particular and general public".

The petition said through their own initiative, they had a grant from the Business Sector Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund for the establishment of the project and appealed for support from the assembly. "The project is dear to our hearts since the district which is one of the leading producers of timber in the country, did not have well-organised or equipped location for the development of the industry in the area.

"The situation did not make the wood processing industry well organised and attractive in the sense that there were so many carpenters in the district who were scattered", the petition added. The petition said with a well-organised industrial village it would also become easier for the district assembly to manage the resources due to the village including utility, sanitation and health.
