Assembly Members of the Central Gonja District Assembly on Friday overwhelmingly endorsed Mr Mumuni Shiraz Yacin, the President’s nominee as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.
Mr Yacin polled 42 votes out of the total 43 Assembly votes representing 98 per cent in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission.
Though the nominee had an overwhelming endorsement, there was drama after the declaration of the results as Assembly members were peeved about the single “NO” vote cast against the nominee and demanded to know the identity of the person.
Some of the Assembly members in frustration openly raised suspicion and accused the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Bede Ziedeng, who per the assembly’s regulations was eligible to vote, that he voted against the nominee.
The Minister debunked the allegations saying, “I am not the one who voted against him”.
The action of the assembly members about the single vote against the nominee was an indication that Mr Yacin is an acceptable person for all to facilitate the development of the area.
Earlier Mr Bede Ziedeng advised the Assembly members to have the development of the place at heart and vote wisely to confirm the nominee so as to develop the District.
He said districts where the President’s nominees had been rejected was not a healthy practice and appealed to all districts in the country to think of helping the government to execute its “Better Ghana Agenda” by voting to confirm nominees.
He said decision making at assemblies must promote peace and unity to propel development and urged assembly members to abstain from acts of acrimony and vilification.
Mr Mumuni Shiraz Yacin, the elected DCE, expressed gratitude to the President for nominating him for the position and thanked the assembly members for the confidence reposed in him.
He gave the assurance that he would run an open door administration to ensure that the problems of the district are solved together adding that he would continue to consult his predecessor for the development of the area.
Other dignitaries who witnessed the election District Chief Executives from Sawla-Tuna-Kalba and West Gonja, deputy Energy Minister, Mr John Jinapor, Mr Amadu Seidu, MP for Yapei-Kusawgu, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru and Tulewewura Alhaji Rashid, a member of the Council of State and some Regional NDC party executives.
