Chief: "Save the Owere River for us"

Accra, Aug. 18, GNA - Nana Batafo Akyeampong, Chief of Konongo in the Ashanti Region, has appealed to the Concerned Citizens Association of Ghana, an environmental non-governmental organisation, to save the Owere stream, that flows through Konongo, from drying up as a result of indiscriminate felling of tress along its banks.

The Owere stream, which is a source of drinking water for about 30 villages and towns, currently has about 25 kilometres stretch completely dried up.

A statement signed by Mr J. Y. Aidoo, National President of the Association, said the situation was adversely affecting the livelihood of the towns and villages in the area.

Mr Aidoo on behalf of the NGO donated axes, water cans, shovels and machetes to the people of Konongo to start nursing seedlings for planting.
