Chief appeals to gov’t to use weeds to produce diesel

A chief has appealed to the government to use the Algalbooms or Sargassum for fuel production to ensure environmental sanitation.

The Weeds are being washed ashore in larger quantities in the country thus posing environmental threat.

Awulae Komavole Kaku III, the chief of Awiaso near Aiyinasi, said this at Half Assini at the just ended workshop on the underlying causes and proposed solution to Ghana’s marine environmental concerns.

The workshop organized by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Ghana) in collaboration with Arcon International (Marine Environmental experts) NGO and funded by Kosmos Energy – Ghana (KEG) was part of nationwide project already held in Accra and Takoradi.

King Kaku Ackah said the weeds were recycled in the United States for D-2 diesel when mixed with some chemicals.

Mr. Osei Yaw of Acorn International said the study revealed that the weeds existed far beyond the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah in the Jubilee field and appeared in Ghana in 2012.

According to Mr. Osei-Yaw, the weeds existed in Jamaica and Sierra Leone.
