Gomoa Benso, (C/R), July 4, GNA - Nana Takyi Wiabo V, Chief of Gomoa Benso, and a US-based businessman has presented food items valued more than GHC20,000 to the flood victims at Agona Swedru and four communities in Gomoa East District. The items include 100 bags of rice, 50 bags of gari, 20 bags of sugar, 25 cartons of cooking oil, 20 cartons of tin tomatoes, 20 cartons of biscuits, 20 boxes of soft drinks, 10 cartons of Milo, 10 cartons of soap and 100 crates of eggs. The victims are at Gomoa Ekwamkrom, Gomoa Jukwa, Gomoa Nsuaem and Gomoa Takyiam.
Mr David Foster Forson, a special aid to Nana Wiabo, who presented the gift on his behalf, said after touring the affected communities, the chief thought it prudent to support the victims to supplement the government's efforts. Floods that followed a heavy down pour on June 20 at Agona Swedru, Nsaba, Duakwa, Asafo and Kwanyako, Agona Nyakrom and four communities in Gomoa East District, claimed 11 lives and destroyed property valued more than GH12, 752,750. He said the situation had made life unbearable for the people, adding that, it would be difficult for the Agona West Municipal, Agona East and Gomoa District Assemblies to solve all the problems of the victims, hence the need for his assistance.
Nana Kobina Botwe II, Swedruhene, who received the items on the behalf of the victims, thanked Nana Wiabo for the kind gesture. He appealed to corporate bodies, financial institutions, non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the diplomatic corps to go to the aid of the victims. Nana Botwe appealed to the Government to re-construct the three bridges on River Akora at Agona Swedru and Agona Nyakrom that were badly damaged during the flood to restore commercial and other business activities to the Municipality. He urged members of the newly formed Agona West Anti-Disaster Committee to work hard and that ensure enough assistance was given to the victims to alleviate their suffering. 04 July 10
