Mr Pius Kweku Quainoo, a trade unionist, has said the President’s clarion call for peace prior to and after elections is good, timely, excellent and the right thing for the nation.
He appealed to Ghanaians not to consider the call as trivial but must work towards it by refraining from acts that would jeopardize the relative peace people are enjoying.
Mr Quainoo, General Secretary of the Ghana Building Material and Construction Workers union (GBMCWU), said these during an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
In his Presidential Address during a parade to mark the independence day celebration, Professor John Atta Mills among others assured the nation that peace would prevail during and after the December general elections.
“If you have seen states that have gone through war, you will realize that what has been achieved for centuries can be destroyed in a short while with people being maimed and other losing their lives,” he said.
Mr Quainoo said “we have one country which is our own” and no one should entertain those who foment trouble “because its of no use” adding that he was privileged to be in Sierra Leone and Liberia and saw able bodied people who cannot work but resorted to alms because both hands have been amputated”.
He said elections should not be taken as a means to engage in conflicts but should be considered as a period to exercise voting rights.
