Community members urged to show interest in capital development projects

Community members have been urged to show keen interest and monitor the implementation of capital development projects being undertaking by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in their areas to ensure that the projects were done in a transparent and accountable manner.

Mr Louis Acheampong, the Executive Director of Social Support Foundation (SSF) an NGO, said the active involvement of community members would help ensure that the projects were tackled and completed on time to improve the living conditions of the people.

Mr Acheampong made the call at a town hall meeting of the chiefs and people of Fomena in the Adansi North District.

The meeting, which formed part of the Ghana Strengthening Accountability Mechanisms (GSAM) project being implemented by SSF in the District, aimed at creating awareness among the people of the duties of the District Assembly in relation to the implementation of capital development projects in the area.

The GSAM project, which started in 2014 seeks to strengthen citizens’ oversight responsibility of capital development projects being undertaken by MMDAs to improve transparency, accountability in local governance.

It is being implemented in 100 districts in the country with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Adansi North, Amansie West and Central, as well as Atwima-Nwabiagya Districts in Ashanti, are benefiting from the project.

Among the projects which is being monitored in the Adansi North were a three-unit classroom block and a Community Health Planning Services (CHPS) compound.

Mr Acheampong was satisfied with the progress of work on these projects and said they would help improve education and healthcare services in the area.

Mr Isaac Odame Awuku, District Director of Health Services, urged the community members to patronize the CHPS compound which was aimed at bringing quality health care delivery to their doorsteps.
