The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has strongly opposed the commercialization of toilet facilities at the New Court Complex in Accra.
According to its Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Kapaito, the practice where people are charged for using washrooms at the court is illegal and must not be countenanced.
Patrons of the facility are charged GHC 50p per every usage. The practice has seen business booming at the venue since hundreds of people attend the courts daily.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr Kapito issued a 21 day ultimatum to the Judicial Service to stop the practice or he takes up the matter in court.
The court complex made up of 42 courtrooms, housing 10 land courts, 10 commercial courts, 6 criminal courts, 6 general jurisdiction court, 3 divorce and matrimonial courts, 2 financial and economic courts, 2 human rights courts, 2 labour courts and a Probate and Administration court was inaugurated by President Mahama last October.
The court complex has banking facilities, cafeteria, 300- seater auditorium, library, a business centre and a media centre. Press briefing room, Executive office for the Attorney General and Police Prosecutor and a data centre among others.
