Awutu-Bawjiase (C/R), July 21, GNA - Commercial drivers plying the Awutu-Bawjiase-Kasoa road have appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Transport to impress upon the contractor rehabilitating the road to expedite action to ensure the early completion of the project. According to the drivers, the present state of the 18-kilometre stretch under rehabilitation did not only impede smooth transportation of goods and services, but also damaged their vehicles.
The drivers made the call at an emergency meeting with the leaders of the Bawjiase branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), at Awutu-Bawjiase on Monday.
The branch Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Alhassan, expressed concern about the delay of the rehabilitation work particularly the Akweley-Nkwanta-Jei-Krodua stretch and expressed the hope that the contractor would complete the work as soon as possible.
Alhaji Alhassan also appealed to the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly to rehabilitate the Awutu-Bawjiase lorry station and to prevent traders from operating at the station and along the road, which exposed them to danger.
He recalled an accident in which two persons lost their lives at the lorry station when a vehicle developed a break fault and run over them.
He stated that some of the traders had made the main market their residence.
Aljaji Alhassan suggested to the assembly to construct a street to link the Bawjiase Area Rural Bank and the Bawjiase Mozama Disco Kristo Church area to give the town a face-lift. He cautioned commercial transport operators to maintain their vehicles to avoid preventable accidents. 21 July 05
