DCE calls for assistance from floods at Nkroful and environs

Motorists plying the Esiama-Teleku-Bokazo route in the Ellembelle District are unable to wade through floods on some portions of the road at Nkroful, the district capital.

The situation has brought commercial activities and other services to a halt as most of the drivers are afraid of their vehicles submerging.

The floods follow torrential rains in the area for some days.

Some of the buildings in lowland areas at Nkroful have again been submerged by the floods after last two year’s similar experience. No casualties have however been recorded.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr. Daniel K. Eshun, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the situation was disturbing and should the rains continue for some consecutive days it could be disastrous.

According to him, that stretch of road between Esiama and Nkroful is in a deplorable state which demands immediate attention.

He, therefore, appealed to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to respond swiftly to the situation before it becomes aggravated.

Mr. Eshun said areas such as Akropong and its environs which were worse hit by torrential rains two years ago seem to be experiencing similar situations although NADMO put in some remedial measures after some feasibility studies.

The DCE stressed that NADMO had to quickly step in at Nkroful because of its strategic position and the lowlands to avert another disaster.**
