DOVVSU to launch strategic plan to make it effective

Ho, Nov. 24, GNA - The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service is to launch a strategic plan next month towards improving its response to domestic violence issues. Chief Superintendent Elisabeth Dassah, National Coordinating Director of the Unit, said this in Ho on Tuesday in an interaction with the Regional Health Directorate as part of her official tour of the Volta Region. She said under the plan, the Unit would establish a closer collaboration with its major stakeholders to ensure success of the campaign against domestic violence.

"We want to build stronger systems to have timely and coordinated response to domestic violence issues," Dassah said. She said though the country was the first to ratify the Convention on the Right of the Child, it was still recording high cases of child abuse and called for the collaboration of all to address the issue. The Director said the Unit was about establishing offices in every district in the region with focal persons in major health facilities and called on the Health Directorate to support the agenda. Dr McDamien Dedzo, Volta Regional Director of Ghana Health Services, expressed the willingness of the Service to give care to victims of domestic violence irrespective of their financial status. He however called for constant education on issues of domestic violence to eliminate it from the society.
