The Regent of Dagbon, Kapamkuya-Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani has appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern Region to sponsor students who qualify to be admitted to health institutions to undergo their courses.
He stated that at present there was inadequate hospital staff in the entire Northern Region because health workers refused postings to the area.
Kapamkuya Na Abdulai Andani made the appeal when he inspected the Demonstration clinic, Hostel accommodation for boys and girls, Administrative block, 10 seater WC and urinal facilities funded jointly by the Yendi Municipal Assembly and CIDA at the Yendi Health Assistants Training School (HATS).
He indicated that midwives, and doctors and nurses in the Yendi government hospital which was a referral hospital for the Eastern Corridor districts are inadequate.
He called on Dagbon youth to study science and go to the Universities to do medicine and come back home to work in their hospitals, saying that the Dagbon Traditional Council was always ready to release lands for the construction of health facilities.
The Principal of HATS, Mr. Awalu Bawa stated that the School needed 20 qualified tutors but had been able to get only seven so far. Mr. Awalu indicated that the school currently offerd courses in Enrolled Nursing, but would soon introduce the study of midwifery and psychiatric nursing. He expressed his appreciation to the Yendi Municipal Assembly for its continuous support to the school.
The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Issah Zakaria announced that a Diploma in Health institution will be established in the area so that more students could pursue Diploma courses in health. He stated that the major problem confronting MATS had to do with water and electricity suuply which, he said, was being attended to.
Mr. Zakaria said now that the Assembly had passed this year’s District Development Facility (DDF) and also qualified to benefit from the World Bank Urban Development Fund, it will undertake more projects in the Municipality.
Kapamkuya-Naa Abdulai Andani also visited the Ghana Water Company Limited Water works, the 1.1 million Australian Dollars Teacher Training College under construction, and the Science and Technology Institution under construction all in the Yendi Municipality.
He expressed concern about the water problem facing the Yendi township and called on the contractor who is to install a Transformer for water to be pumped from three mechanized bore holes to the treatment reservoir of the Ghana Water Company Limited to speed up the work.
He announced that he and his chiefs had released 57.7 acres of land free of charge to the Roman Catholic Church and its Australian partners for the construction of the new Training College and other infrastructure for the college. He commended the Bishop of Yendi, Mr Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai for his efforts towards the establishment of the college.
The Yendi Municipal Manager of Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Adam Sayibu announced that there were plans for the Ghana Government in partnership with the Government of Israel to connect the Yendi town water supply system to River Oti as a long term solution.
