"Debt cancellation should precipitate upgrading of workers salaries"

Mankessim (C/R), June 27, GNA - Nana Araba Otua II, Queenmother of the Mankessim Traditional Area has appealed to the government to use funds which would have gone to service Ghana's debts that were recently written off to improve salaries of workers in the public sector. This she said would serve as incentive to inspire them to increase productivity and also minimise corruption within the sector to enhance good governance.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Mankessim on Sunday Nana Otua said the low salaries paid to workers accounted for low productivity at workplaces and promoted corruption within the public sector. She urged the media to be circumspect about what they publish, especially on the debt cancellation issue so as not to portray the government in a "bad light".

"We all need to contribute our quota towards the creation of a positive image of the country", Nana Otua said. She urged scholars and well-to-do individuals who hail from rural areas to ensure that their personal achievements impacted positively on the development of their communities.
