The controversy caused by the installment of Torgbui Afla Awunor Detu IX as new chief of Aflao took a new twist yesterday after Torgbui Tengey Sabbah V, Divisional Chief of Aflao sternly cautioned Torgbui Fiti, the current occupant, to stop meddling in their affairs.
He noted that though the Aflao Stool was not at war, they would not countenance further acts intended to infringe upon their rights, stressing that they would not surrender to threats by anybody within the area.
At a news conference in Accra yesterday, Torgbui Sabbah V, Divisional Chief of Aflao and spokesperson for the group, criticized some elements in the area for inciting trouble and creating panic because legitimate rulers had installed their chief which he said had nothing to do with other chiefs.
It would be recalled that on September 19, this year, the kingmakers, elders and some people allegedly from the Aflao Stool installed Torgbui Afla Awunor Detu IX as successor to his great grandfather, the late chief, Awunor Detu VIII.
Since that time the stool had been occupied by ‘caretakers’ until the family selected Torgbui Detu, the current occupant who is expected to be presented to the Anlo State and the Anlo Traditional Council, they claimed.
Noting that the installation of the new chief of Aflao by the kingmakers was not an attempt to install a rival chief in the area, he stated that “it is rather to continue with what our predecessors have left for us to protect, preserve and promote our long cherished heritage.”
Torgbui Sabbah V maintained that the installment of the new chief has been “long overdue.’
The spokesperson for the group, who also condemned attempts by some elements to adulterate the history of the people, emphatically stated that “the stool on which Torgbui is now sitting is our own stool; it is not a new stool that we have just bought.”
In line with this, he warned troublemakers to revise their notes.
“We are not at war, if Torgbui Fiti dares us for war because of our own property and heritage, then we are battle ready for him and whoever wants to support his diabolic act,” he cautioned.
Torgbui Sabbah V also expressed surprise at reports that the Awoamefia of Anlo, Torgbui Sri had distanced himself from the investiture of their chief, adding that “may be because of his busy schedule, he has failed to find out from his council of elders, his warlords and others whether the people of Aflao had given the mandate. We pardon him for now and from here, we plan to meet him.”
