Dr. Afriyie elected NPP candidate for Sefwi-Wiaso.

Takoradi, May 17 GNA - Dr. Kweku Afriyie, Minister of Health has been elected unopposed as New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the Sefwi-Wiaso constituency in the upcoming elections.

All the 73 out of the 97 members of the party executives present at the constituency congress at the weekend gave Dr. Afriyie their mandate to contest the election on the ticket of the NPP.

His election brings to rest many months of wrangling and squabbles that brought sharp division among members of the party in the constituency. Mr. Peter Mac-Manu, Western Regional chairman of the party told the Ghana News Agency at Takoradi on Monday that, "Now that the hurdle at Sefwi-Wiaso has been cleared, the fight is a straight forward one between the NPP and the NDC".

He urged members and sympathisers of the party in the constituency to burry their differences and work towards victory in the December elections, and added that, the Sefwi area is no longer the stronghold of the NDC.

Mr. Mac-Manu said the people are witnesses to the efforts being made by the government to open up the area, adding that, this alone is sufficient to win the support of the majority of them.

Dr. Afriyie gave the assurance that he would work hard to win the seat and said he would help to provide needed logistics to enable the party capture the other constituencies in the Sefwi area.

He expressed his gratitude to Mr. Kwesi Blay, a Lawyers who stepped down as a contestant to the Sefwi-Wiaso constituency to make him (Dr. Afriyie) the sole candidate.

Mr. Fraincis Quansah, regional secretary, Mr. Kojo Acquah, regional organiser and Miss Joana Abena Kwalla, regional women's organiser were among executives of the party who supervised the election.
