Education Decentralization Advisory Committee inaugurated

Sunyani, Nov 16, GNA - Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, the Brong -Ahafo Regional Minister, has said education played an essential role in building democratic societies and created a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Regional Education Decentralization Advisory Committee in Sunyani. He said developed economies in the world had attained an enviable status because they paid much attention to the development of education. Mr Marfo said it was in this direction that the government had undertaken massive infrastructural development at all levels of education to ensure the provision of infrastructure and quality human resource towards the achievement of accelerated socio-economic development. He said the government had embarked on a programme to provide infrastructure, specifically in senior high schools, to cater for the increased population of students.

Mr Marfo appealed to members of the committee to live up to expectation. Mr. Victor Nortey of the Ghana Education Decentralization Project said the project was meant to help build on current initiatives in the education sector. It is aimed at providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Education to decentralize the Ghana Education Service. The rationale behind the formation of the Committee, he said, was to create a regional level multi-stakeholders' advisory platform that will provide guidance and local stakeholders' support to the implementation of Ghana Educational Decentralization Project. 16 Nov 10
