Koforidua, July 8, GNA - The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Awurabena Ahwoi has called for the establishment of an educational system that allows for dropouts to latter rejoin the system when they decide to do so.
She explained that, such a system needed to be made available at all levels of the educational ladder and in both the rural and urban areas.
Mrs Ahwoi made the call at a welcoming ceremony of the students of the Women Development Centre(WDC) of the All Nation University (ANU) for Dr Akua Benjamin, a social worker of Ryerson University, Toronto Canada who is in the country to assist the ANU to develop a curriculum for social workers.
The WDC of the ANU enrols market women of all ages in the Koforidua Municipality and teach the illiterate ones among them how to read and write and offer them training in business development, management, marketing and how to source funding from the banks and other financial institutions.
The Centre also offers education in women reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and leadership training, all at no cost to the women.
Mrs Ahwoi called on the students of the WDC to share the knowledge that they had acquired from the centre with others.
Nana Yaa Daani II, Queenmother of New Juaben Traditional area expressed her appreciation to the university for devoting part of its resources to help in the emancipation of women in the traditional set-up and pledged the support of the traditional authorities in the area towards the success of the project.
Ms Jane Kwapong of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs said when women are empowered, they would have the confidence to say "no to things that they really do not want."
Dr. Benjamin, who is a national of Trinidad said the world could not progress without the support of women and considered her coming to Ghana as home-coming.
Ms Stephanie Asare, Project Co-ordinator for All Nation International Development Agency, sponsors of the ANU and WDC said the WDC has a student population of 700 women who were all receiving free tuition.
Mr. Emmanuel K. Oware, Registrar of ANU, who chaired the function said the WDC project forms part of the social responsibility of the university to the community where it is situated.
