Abura Edukrom (C/R) Feb. 18, GNA - Mrs Alice Marie Agyemang, Deputy Central Regional Director of Education on Tuesday inaugurated a 40 million cedis library for the local junior secondary school (JSS) at Edukrom in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District.
The project, was jointly financed by Ms Jennifer Abena Gunther, a 19-year-old German volunteer and 'Childcare International, Ghana an NGO based in Cape Coast.
The donors, have also stocked the library with an assortment of a total of 500 books for pre-schools, primary and senior secondary schools and some reference books for teachers, while Ms Kate Etrue, Assembly member for the area, also donated reading books worth one million cedis. Mrs Agyemang underscored the importance of libraries in education and appealed to both teachers and parents to ensure that the school children patronised it.
She expressed the hope that it would not become a white elephant and suggested that periods should be set-aside for the children to go to the library.
Mrs Agyemang commended the donors for their gesture and expressed the hope the arrangements would be made for all schools in the community to use the facility.
To show their appreciation, the community presented Ms Gunther with a kente cloth, sandals and necklace while Mr Victor Eghan, Director of the NGO was presented with a wall clock.
Mr Eric Ameyaw Headteacher of the school in his welcoming address said the provision of the library would go a long way to inculcate in the pupils effective reading habits to improve their academic standards.
