The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has dismissed calls for the government to initiate a swift operation for the immediate arrest and detention of former President John Mahama following the 2024 elections.
In a statement shared on social media, the MCE expressed confidence that concerns about Mr. John Mahama potentially causing chaos by falsely claiming victory in the election are unnecessary. He believes that the people of Ghana will not take such claims seriously.
"The Ghanaian people are discerning and will not be fooled by Mr. John Mahama," the MCE stated, emphasizing that the former president would be disregarded if he attempts to repeat such actions.
This assurance from the MCE comes after a suggestion by a former executive of the NDC in the Tema East constituency, Stephen Ashitey Adjei, also known as Moshake, for the government to be prepared to arrest and detain John Mahama if he disputes the election results in 2024.
Moshake emphasized the importance of maintaining peace after the election to avoid any violence like what occurred in 2020.
Moshake recalled how tensions were heightened after the 2020 election due to NDC's claims of winning, despite the clear results showing otherwise.
“In 2020, nobody arrested John Mahama after he had claimed that he had won 10 out of the 16 regions. Ghanaians just ignored his claims and life moved on. It is the same thing that will happen in 2024 too,” Yohane Amarh Ashitey wrote.
He further noted that Ghanaians will not entertain any baseless claims from Mahama in 2024. He expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia will emerge victorious in the election, citing the support shown by the youth for the current government.
As the youth actively participate in the limited registration process and show their appreciation for the government's policies, Ashitey believes that any attempts by Mahama to dispute the election outcome will be disregarded.
“We will go into the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia will win and Ghanaians will be so busy jubilating that nobody will have the time to listen to any spurious claims by Mr. John Mahama, look at the way the youth are participating in the limited registration exercise in order to retain the NPP government because of free education, go and see how the youth are openly praising the Akufo Addo-Bawumia government at the EC’s registration centres!” Yohane Amarh Ashitey wrote.
