The 2024 Parliamentary candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema West, Dennis Amfo-Sefah, was a crowd favourite on Thursday, when he hosted Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his constituency.
The Vice President had visited Tema West as part of a tour of the Greater Accra Region.
But as host PC, the man who is popularly called Nana Boakye became an unplanned sideshow, with crowds mobbing him and singing victory songs for him ahead of the elections in December.
Even though Tema West is a known safe seat for the NPP, voters’ enthusiasm with Nana Boakye during the visit of Dr. Bawumia was a bit unprecedented, given that none of his predecessors had commanded such public charisma.
The Tema West NPP Parliamentary candidate would later say that he has been humbled by the outpouring of love.
“I am humbled and grateful to my constituents that even though I am not yet in Parliament, they show me so much love and affection,” he later told journalists covering the Bawumia campaign tour.
He added that, “I want them to know that I do not take any of it for granted and will work hard to ensure that the votes that they give me are protected during the polls in December.”
Nana Boakye also thanked the constituents of Tema West for “keeping faith with the NPP throughout the years.”
The NPP currently holds the Tema West seat with Hon. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah as the sitting MP.
Mr. Ahenkorah had succeeded Lawyer Naa Torshie Addo, who had been MP for two terms before she was rejected in the parliamentary primary of the NPP.
Mr. Amfo-Sefah, a former Chairman of the Tema West Constituency NPP is already a darling boy in the constituency, trashing his opponent in the NPP’s parliamentary primary by a margin of more than 6,000 votes.
After he was declared winner in the primary, the current MP, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah who had decided not to go for re-election hoisted his hand as victor.
The 2024 candidate has promised to continue the good works of his predecessor if elected as MP.
