Eleven KNUST students benefit from Nankani scholarship

Kumasi, May 7, GNA - Eleven second-year students of the Kwame Nkrumah Universty of Science and Technology (KNUST) have benefited from the S.T. Nankani scholarship scheme, since it was instituted last year. A total of 22 million cedis have so far been disbursed to the beneficiaries with each receiving two million cedis for one-year period. Five of the beneficiaries received the award last year, while the remaining six benefited from it this year at a ceremony held at the KNUST in Kumasi on Thursday.

The scheme covers only brilliant but needy students offering pharmacy, agriculture science, engineering, medicine and science. The six beneficiaries for this year's scholarships include Gilbert Adongo, Department of Science, Godwin Kyere Edmond, Civil Engineering, Alhassan Aduso, Department of Chemistry, Bonful Mariam Sam, School of Medical Sciences, Azabra Aaron Nzabillah, Physics and Richard Boafo, Agricultural Science.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Ben Hagan, secretary for the board of directors of the Nankani scholarship scheme, said 60 million cedis has been invested in the scheme from the legacy of the late S.T. Nankani, then chairman of Nankani and Hagan Group of Companies.

He said more investments would continue to be made into the scheme to sustain and extend it to many more students of KNUST.

Dr Hagan appealed to female students to take advantage of the scheme to enable them benefit from the scholarships, saying, it has only been male beneficiaries, because, it was mainly male students who applied for consideration.

He disclosed that this year, 36 applications were received with all of them coming from male students. Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of the University, who did the presentation, expressed the gratitude of KNUST to the Nankani Group of Companies for their contribution towards helping to turn out quality students.

He appealed to the affluent and various companies to emulate the good example of the Nankani family by also sacrificing to assist brilliant but needy students in the pursuit of their education.
