Reliable information gathered by Peacefmoline.com indicates that some encroachers have taken over lands belonging to Adonten Senior High School in Aburi–Akuapem in the Eastern Region.

According to reports gathered so far, a woman who says she is a member of the family which donated the land to the school claims that the land across the road designated as site B on the land map was not part of the land donated.

The woman is claiming about seven acres of the thirteen acres of land at that portion of the land.

An Executive Instrument was passed on the 15th day of September 1978 protecting the school lands donated by about three families.

The Executive Instrument is titled: State Lands (Aburi-Site for Adonten Secondary School) Instrument, 1979.

“Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred on the Supreme Military Council by subsection (1) of section 1 of the State Lands Act, 1962 (Act 125), this Instrument is made this 15th day of September, 1978.

“This land specified in the schedule of this Instrument is hereby declared to be land required in the public interest,” a prelude to the Instrument read.

The Executive Instrument was signed by then Commissioner for Lands and Natural Resources, Prof George Benneh.

According to sources, on Thursday, 10th May the woman sent excavators to work on the said land.

But management of the school say they have documents covering the school land with that portion inclusive approved by the Headquarters of the Lands Commission, Accra.

The Adonten Secondary School lands contain an approximate of 66.67acres situated in the Akuapem District in the Eastern Region of the Republic of Ghana.

History

Adonten Senior High School was started as a private Senior High School at Aburi - Akuapem on 10th January 1957 by Mr. Moses Agyare Kwabi.

From 1957 to September 1963 the school was run and organized by the proprietor, who was then the part-time Headmaster and General Manager.

However, on 1st October 1963, the Ministry of Education absorbed Adonten Secondary School into the public system as a day secondary school with hostel attached.

At the beginning of the 1972/73 academic year, the government fully took over the running of the school.

Movement to the new site

At the current location, the school is about a kilometer away from the old site (Asuafum) on the Aburi - Nsawam road.

A partial movement to the new site was made in 1996 under the then Headmaster Mr. Ezekiel Sakyiamah.

Four main structures existed at the new site then - a science block, a classroom block, a library and one staff bungalow.

Originally in 1996, only classes were organized at the new site. All other activities remained at the old site. In late 1997 Adonten Secondary School was partially moved from the old site to the new site (with the exception of female boarding students) when the PTA put up a permanent kitchen and Public Investment Project also provided a KVIP for the school.

In 2005 the female boarding students were also permanently moved to the new site.
