Families of May 9 disaster meet Board of Trustees

The Accra Sports Stadium Disaster Board of Trustees on Wednesday met with families of the May 9 Stadium Disaster that occurred 13 years ago to know how they are faring.

The board of trustees was established after the disaster to provide the needed financial support to the families.

Dr. Selbi Ashong-Katai, Acting Chairman of the Board said: “The board has since been given the responsibilities to manage the disaster fund for the benefit of the education of the children of school-going age of the deceased victims, right from pre-nursery to senior high school or its equivalent levels”.

He said the board is catering for 88 children this academic year, with 43 of them at the basic level, 39 in senior high school and six at the tertiary level.

He said although the board was not initially mandated to cater for children who have gotten to the tertiary level, but the board saw it necessary to do so since their performance was impressive.

Alhaji Klotey, a parent thanked the board for the support they have been showing them without failure and pleaded with members to increase the sum considering the current economic situation.

The Accra Sports Stadium Disaster occurred in 2001 killing 127 spectators during a league match between Ghana’s famous two football clubs- Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
