Tarkwa, (W/R), July 13, GNA - Part of the UAC building at Tarkwa was set ablaze on Wednesday morning. Others joined personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service at Tarkwa from Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) and Taysec, a road construction company to put the fire under control. The fire did not destroy property, though, in a rush to evacuate goods from some stores, some of the goods were destroyed in the process. UAC building is situated between Ghana Telecom and Tarkwa - Aboso main road. The building contains stores including All Needs Supermarket, Beneto, Blacka, Topline and Joman enterprises. The Police and city wardens were deployed to ensure that there was no looting.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency, a storekeeper, Mr David Esigbey said about 0800 hours on Wednesday morning, it was detected that smoke was coming out of the roof of the block. He said other storekeepers who had come to open their stores became alarmed and officials of the National Fire Service was alerted. Mr Alex Atikuno, Divisional Fire Officer in charge of Tarkwa District said the cause of the fire was not immediately known. He said it took a combine team of fire personnel about four hours to put the fire under control.
