The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has suffered a fire incident that has damaged major cables running behind the Lube Oil Company in Tema.
The fire, which reportedly broke out around 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, destroyed the cables, which will need to be replaced as they cannot be salvaged.
This incident caused a temporary power outage for customers in areas such as Adjetey Ansah, the Naval Quarters, Aunty Kate, Leonardo, and Bankuman. Some of these customers unfortunately had their power restored only the following day.
However, by the morning of Wednesday, January 1, 2025, all affected customers had their power supply restored.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The Public Relations Officer of the Tema Region of ECG, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, expressed gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service for their timely intervention in controlling the blaze.
When asked about the cost of the damaged cables, Ms. Mensah stated, "The extent of the damage is still being assessed. Until this assessment is completed, it will be difficult for us to determine the exact cost. However, it will definitely be a significant cost, as the damage is major."
She also apologised to the affected customers who were without power as they ushered in the new year due to this fire incident.
Ms. Mensah further cautioned the public to handle open fires with care, especially during dry weather and in bushy areas, as fires can easily spread, causing extensive damage to property and impacting businesses.
