Four hundred communities in Upper West to get electricity

Wechiau, (UWR), Aug. 27, GNA - The government is working towards extending electricity to about 400 rural communities in the Upper West Region by the end of this year, Mr. Rashid Pelpuo, Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, has said.

Mr. Pelpuo, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa Central, said communities which were extremely distant from the national grid would be provided with solar electricity.

Mr. Pelpuo said this, on Thursday, when he addressed assembly members and heads of Departments at the second ordinary session of the Wa West District Assembly, at Wechiau, in the Upper West Region.

The Deputy Majority Leader noted that the recently promulgated Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) Law seeks to remove the development obstacles confronting the North and ensure a holistic development that would bring the people out of the poverty.

The MP pointed out that the STX Housing Project, which would provide 200,000 housing units across the country was on course.

He asked assembly members to get adequate information about government policies, programmes and projects to enable them to lend their support towards their successful implementation.

On Education, Mr. Pelpuo called on the assembly members to make it their topmost priority to ensure that all children of school going age are enrolled, adding that, they should also monitor and report all educational challenges in their areas to the District Assembly.

Mr. Pelpuo said security was very necessary for development and urged assembly members to constantly put in efforts to maintain law and order in their electoral areas so that development could take place without any hindrance.

He stressed the need for them to respect chiefs and their traditional councils, the District Chief Executive and other opinion leaders and work closely with them to bring about peace and development to their people.
