Kumasi, Oct.11, GNA - The Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM) has now taken over the management and administration of the Islamic Senior Secondary, Junior and Primary schools at Abrepo in Kumasi. This followed a Supreme Court ruling, which gave the ownership of the schools and a Mosque situated on the schools compound to the Mission.
The ruling ends a 21 year-old litigation over the ownership of the schools, between the Mission and Sheikh Adam Apeadu, former chief Imam of the Mission, who had claimed ownership of the schools since 1982. Elders and members of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Mission, led by Alhaji Musa Kofi Nuama, Regional Secretary on Thursday, officially opened the doors of the schools for academic work to proceed. The doors had been locked since October 5, this year by high court bailiffs on the orders of the Supreme Court. Speaking to the media after the exercise, Alhaji Nuama said the school was started in 1969 by the GMM through annual harvests and donations from Saudi Arabia .
He said Sheikh Apeadu, who was appointed the headmaster, later laid claim to the schools and all its properties. Alhaji Nuama said all efforts by the elders of the Mission and other important dignitaries to resolve the problem with Sheikh Apeadu proved futile until July this year when the Supreme Court ruled that, the schools belonged to the Mission.
He said Sheikh Apeadu had controlled the schools personally throughout the years without making any accounts to the Mission. Alhaji Nuama stated that, the elders would sit down with the headmasters and teachers of the schools to find out their problems and chart a new course for the school.
The SSS currently has a student population of 40 while the total number of the pupils in the primary school was less than 40. The JSS has 30 pupils.
Among the elders at the ceremony were Alhaji Ibrahim Alkad, regional chief Imam, Alhaji Mohammed Kyerepim, protocol officer and Abdullah Opoku Ware, regional youth director.
