GPRTU calls on Police to clamp down on "okada" operators

Mr Robert Sarbah, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), has called on the police to clamp down on the activities of commercial motorbike operators in the country.

He told the GNA in an interview that the activities of these commercial motorbike operators, popularly known as “okada”, pose a danger to lives and property on the roads.

Mr Sarbah said the operators created unnecessary traffic on the roads, with some of them breaking traffic regulations with impunity while others turned the pavements into alternative roads during peak traffic hours thereby endangering the lives of pedestrians.

He said okada operation was illegal in Ghana and therefore the police must enforce the law.

Mr Sarbah appealed to the National Road Safety Commission to organize regular seminars and workshops to refresh the Union members on road traffic regulations.
