GWC disinfect private water tankers

Takoradi, Aug. 15, GNA – The Western Regional office of the Ghana Water Company (GWC) on Monday began cleaning and disinfecting private water tanks operating in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis to ensure that consumers were supplied with good water.

Mr Kwamina Acquah, Communications Officer of GWC, told the Ghana News Agency that the move was necessary to deal with the contamination of water transported by private water tanker operators.

He said most of the operators use their water tankers for dual or multiple purposes such as carrying untreated water from streams and rivers to construction sites without disinfecting the tankers.

Mr Acquah said we have received several complaints from consumers about the quality of water supplied by private water tankers.

He said about 21 tankers have been cleaned and disinfected and certificates have been presented to operators of the tankers.

He said private water tankers should have the inscription “Drinking water only” on them and that operators who did not have the inscription on their tankers would not be allowed to operate or fill their tankers with water at the GWC filling points.

Mr Acquah called on the general public to be alert and report operators who use their tankers for dual or multiple purposes.

He said the cleansing and disinfecting program would be carried out every six months and urged private water operators to assist in the program.
