Amasaman (GAR), April 17, GNA - Mr. Eric Busby Quartey-Papafio, Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA), on Thursday presented 10 motorbikes valued at 28,990 Ghana Cedis to its Zonal Councils to assist them in carrying out their duties in their communities.
The motorbikes are to strengthen the capacity of its six Zonal Councils to bring government closer to people living in these communities and encourage community participation.
Mr. Quartey-Papafio said the motorbikes, which were purchased from the GWMA Common Fund, would assist the Zonal Councils to remain focused on improving the living conditions in the their localities and outlying rural areas. "In the past certain areas were inaccessible to the Zonal Councils but we expect that the motorbikes will strengthen them in revenue mobilization and in addressing other issues related to sanitation," he said.
The Municipal Chief Executive said experience had shown that communities can best be organized quickly and productively to diagnose local problems, strengthen community organizations and meet requirements of accountability through a functioning decentralized system of local government.
Mr. Quartey-Papafio advised the beneficiaries to use the motorbikes for the intended purpose and take good care of them. He reaffirmed that GWMA would continue to pursue policies that would promote rapid development in local communities and added that the Assembly was expecting 48 new bicycles also to be distributed among the Zonal Councils.
