Akyem Sekyere, June 15, GNA - Members of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), has established a 1,000 bird poultry farm at Akyem Sekyere in the Atiwa District to generate funds to improve the living standards of its members.
The farm, that produces over 500 eggs a day, was established with the two percent share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to the physically challenged in the district. Mr Sekyere Boateng, District Chairman of the Federation, disclosed thi= s when he broke the ground for the construction of structures to expand the poultry farm from 1,000 to 3,000 birds on a one and a half acre land at Akyem Anyinam.
He said World Joy International, an American based non governmental organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints, was assisting the federation in their expansion project at the cost of GH¢120,000 and also given them management training to manage the project. Mr Boateng commended the Atiwa District Chief Executive, Mr Emmanuel Attah-Twum, for his assistance and cooperation towards the establishment of the project.
Mr Justice Yeboah, Project Officer of the Farm, said proceeds from the farm would be shared among over 300 physically challenged persons in the district to finance their individual projects and businesses to raise funds to educate their children. Mr Stephen Apeaning Abu, Country Director of World Joy, said the NGO= 's responsibility was to assist the needy in the society to enhance their development. He said since it started operating in the district six years ago, 19 kindergartens, primary and junior high schools, three KVIPs and a community health planning service had been constructed in the various communities to improve the living standards of the people.
