Ho, Oct. 23, GNA - Mama Attratoh II, Queen of Ho-Dome on Friday reiterated the need for government to create a "House of Queens" to make up for the absence of queens in the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs in the country.
Mama Attratoh made the call at a day's advocacy workshop on, "Building Bridges of Understanding to End Cultural Practices that Violate the Rights of Women in Ghana," organized by Royal Care and Support (ROCAS) for traditional rulers, security officers and opinion leaders in Ho.
She said the composition of the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs currently was not a true reflection of the traditional leadership and said until queens were accepted into the Houses or had their own "House of Queens," efforts at addressing issues concerning women and empowering them would be meaningless.
"Women know issues affecting them better and are the best to resolve those issues and should no longer be relegated to the background," Mama Attratoh said adding that women were in the majority in the country and it was unfair for men to be "domineering." "The dictatorial attitude of the Ghanaian men has made some women including queens timid," she observed.
Mama Attratoh therefore charged government to act in time so women could assume their rightful positions, empower themselves and help the rapid socio-economic development of the country.
"A House of Queens would educate women on their rights and responsibilities and help eliminate all forms of abuses and violations against women as well as empower them to take up decision making positions," she said.
